Speaking and Listening

Speaking and Listening

Spoken language underpins all areas of learning and is fundamental to pupils’ success. At Great Wood, we place strong emphasis on developing children’s confidence and competence in speaking and listening.

We build children’s language and vocabulary, extend their use through questions and repeated use and encourage oral practice of sharing ideas. Opportunities for discussion are carefully structured to support ALL  learners. Teachers model high-quality language, extend pupils’ responses and provide time for thinking before speaking. Children are encouraged to rehearse their ideas orally, whether with a partner, in a small group or as part of whole-class discussion, helping them to organise their thoughts before expressing them more formally.

Through activities such as debate, drama, storytelling and performances, children are given regular opportunities to speak in front of different audiences, building both confidence and communication skills.
