Modern Foreign Languages
MFL FRENCH CURRICULUM INTENT
At Great Wood, we have developed a high quality Modern Foreign Languages (French) curriculum which aims to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to French speakers, both in speech and in writing.
Opportunities are provided for children to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read familiar stories in French. Teaching aims to create an enjoyment of language learning and provides the foundation for learning further languages.
Children have weekly French lessons in alternate half terms throughout Key Stage 2, taught by the same teacher. Topics taught have been selected to interest children and ensure that the learning is relevant to their lives as well as making cultural connections. Lessons focus on consolidation of language learnt and the introduction of new language and is taught through fun and engaging activities, including games, songs and short writing opportunities.
The sequence of lessons is built upon skills and language learnt in previous years in order to ensure progression of knowledge throughout Key Stage 2.
