English
Reading, writing and spoken language underpins learning across the whole curriculum, developing communication skills that will enable our children to succeed long after they have left Great Wood. We place reading at the heart of our curriculum, recognising that it is an essential skill which enables children to acquire knowledge and build on existing knowledge. We aim to foster a life-long love of reading and develop confident, fluent readers. Our English curriculum enables children to speak and write fluently to communicate their ideas and emotions. Providing purposeful opportunities to learn and develop these skills, along with our embedded key drivers, ultimately helps our children become successful members of society in an ever-changing world.
We support the aims of the National Curriculum (2014) which states that all pupils should:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
- are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate
