Art and Design

At Great Wood, we provide a high-quality art and design education that engages, inspires and challenges children.

Children are equipped with knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We have developed a detailed Art curriculum which is connected to the wider school context and enables multiple links to other subjects taught in school. For example, Geography links have produced art work based on our spectacular location here at Morecambe Bay. Younger children have studied the work of Piet Mondrian and Paul Klee and linked this to their learning about shapes in Mathematics.

At Great Wood, the Art curricula is broad and includes culturally and ethnically diverse artists. We want children to understand that art is made by all sorts of people and in a variety of ways. Children are encouraged to think critically, have opinions and develop a visual literacy about art.

The skills-based art curriculum focuses on developing artistic techniques and building on prior learning. We aim to empower children to represent themselves successfully artistically during their time at Great Wood but also to continue a positive relationship with art in their future life, recognising it as one of the highest forms of human activity.
